Order of Malta

Opportunity: Our staff is comprised of more than 50 volunteer physicians and nurses. Our experienced team members have worked for some of the most renowned medical institutions and healthcare providers including:

  • University of California, San Francisco

  • Kaiser Permanente

  • Sutter Health

  • St. Mary’s Medical Center

Last year, our volunteers served more than 9,600 hours – a 21 percent increase from the previous year. With a growing patient base, volunteer recruitment is always a priority of ours. We encourage talented physicians and medical staff to contact us for information on volunteer opportunities.

  • Organization/Sponsor: Order of Malta is a lay order of the Catholic Church which ministers to the sick and the poor of many nations.

  • Detailed Description: Today, an estimated 500,000 people live without health insurance in the Greater Bay Area, including more than 195,000 people in Alameda County. Studies have shown that, historically, low-income individuals and people of color face barriers to access health care, receive lower-quality care, and ultimately experience worse health outcomes. Our Clinic exists to address the health disparities among these under-served populations. We serve patients without insurance and do not require paperwork or proof of citizenship. Many are undocumented families who are wary of seeking medical attention at doctor’s offices or hospitals. More than half of our patients do not visit a doctor regularly and most new patients have received little to no medical attention in recent years. For many, our clinic is their only source of medical care.

  • Medical Specialties needed: Our clinic is staffed by health care professionals with various types of specialities: general practice, neurology, oncology, pulmonology, ophthalmology, cardiology, and more, therefore we welcome medical and nursing volunteers with all disciplines. We currently have a need in areas of mental health, endocrinology, and infectious disease.

  • Location: 2121 Harrison Street, Oakland, CA, next to the Cathedral of Christ the Light

  • Time Required: Volunteers can offer half days (morning or afternoon) or full day shifts, and as often as they wish.

    • Clinic hours are:

      • Monday, Wednesday and Friday (9:00 am – 4:00 pm)

      • Tuesdays – Specialty clinic; by appointment only

      • Thursdays (9:00am – 12:00 pm)

  • Volunteer: We require volunteers to complete a volunteer form, and provide the following: resume/CV, and documentation of Hepatitis B series immunization and current PPD.

  • Malpractice Insurance: We encourage our physician volunteers to carry their own malpractice insurance.
