Opportunity: Volunteering at a non-profit that provides free, non-clinical supportive services to women with cancer in Alameda and parts of Contra Costa counties.

  • Detailed Description: Services include: Support Groups, including specific groups for African American and Latina women; Wellness Workshops open to the general public including body movement, creative expression, mindfulness, cooking & nutrition; Special Events such as quarterly art openings, presentations by medical specialists, and community celebrations; Navigation to improve access to medical care for referred clients; Outreach to promote community education & wellness; one-time Emergency Financial Assistance grants for referred clients.

    • Volunteer roles include: staffing the Information & Referral line, a helpline open 10-4 pm to the general public; being a Community Outreach Advocate providing information, education & resources to the general public at community events; Administrative & Fundraising Volunteers who support on-going office duties and projects; Swim A Mile for Women with Cancer annual volunteers during the first weekend in October, various roles.

    • WCRC collaborations include: UCSF Mt. Zion’s, Friend to Friend program that provides wigs, prostheses and hats. WCRC also hosts The Second Opinion consultations on the fourth Friday of every month, which provide free second opinions.

    • It is a gratifying experience as well as one that keeps one in touch with the status of health care delivery and the challenges to patients in our community.
